Strongly influenced by the 19th century romantic era and oriental inks, the Mediterranean landscape is where he found his first real liberty, far from what was generally expected of the artist in England.
The early years in France were spent painting hundreds of scenes in simple primary tones almost always incorporating some evidence of a past event.
His subjects changed, and with that the notion of a universal bodily expression that is restrained from an early age. The more recent work is an endeavour to depict that true nature of the individual, away from the codes of conduct imposed on us by our environment.
Born in Cyprus in 1954 Dervish grew up in London. He attended the Cambridge College of art and in 1986 met the painter and typographer Edward Wright who was to greatly influence his direction.
In 1989 he moved to the aude in the south of France where the success of his first solo exhibitions has firmly set him on the path which he continues today.
His work is to be found in private collections throughout Europe, in the U.S.A and in Japan.
Avant tout, il y a l’attachement de l’artiste à l’idée du beau, en dehors des courants de pensée qui tendent à sur intellectualiser l’œuvre d’art. Une figure est là, reconnaissable, et puis, le regard vagabonde autour, et bientôt au-delà.
Entre la maîtrise du geste et la libre action de l’eau, c’est là que se situent ses aquarelles, et c’est là, dans l’entre deux, que s’affirme l’intériorité de l’artiste.
